It looks like the slip joint connector has slipped. This is the way gutters were built back in the day when Dirtbunny was talking but not yet reading. Nowadays the gutter people show up with a roll of coated aluminum and a forming machine. They measure the length they need and form it and cut it on the spot. Cheap easy and no connectors to fail apart.
