Old Lady Post: Football is Suffering

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON OCTOBER 27, 2010

Juventus went to the Renato Dall'Ara last Sunday.  Some stuff happened, and then some other stuff happened and then Bologna parked the bus in the second half and Juve worked really hard but could not find a way through.   Here's the cold hard truth:  I don't want to talk about it.

Oh, Vincenzo.......

Although I remember that there were eleven zebes in the match, there are photos of only eight of them, plus subs.  Marcostorari started in goal, and Gio and Leo held the center of the back line.  The match started out badly.  The boys kept sending inaccurate long balls forward to no one, possession was sloppy, and they'd press forward but then lose the ball at about the 3/4 mark.  JUST LIKE ALL OF LAST SEASON.

Oh hell. Let's just get this over with.

Marcolino started on the right.

This is not Marco's fault, but who decided on the away jerseys paired with the home pants?  Fashion fail.

Marco was fairly decent.  He got a yellow in the 11th for a ridiculous tackle, but when he slid in, his shorts rode way up and showed us some of his butt, so it's all good.

Over on the other side, we had PDC.

He's had some really good performances this season.  I wish he had a reliable back-up, but what do I know.

TANGENT:  Juventus defenders who are unavailable due to injury or "other":  Buffon, Grosso, Traore, Grygera, Rinaudo.

Moving on, Claudio, Albertino, God's Favorite Brazilian, and Milos started in midfield.

Hey there, MDV. Call me?

Albertino is settling in nicely.

Ekdal is pretty?  I don'tsee it.

Albertino looks somewhat less terrified than he did at the start of the season.

Mostly

Not Ciro put Claudio out on the left wing.

People who, unlike me, actually know something about football seem to think that he's better in the middle.  Maybe so, but he acquitted himself well this time.

He's starting to look a little pale and spindly again.  This is a bit worrying.

Does he have a parasite?  Eat something, bb.

And ditch the beard.

Melo got through yet another match without committing a criminal offense.  *iz proud*

I really am.  He's playing well and he has really turned his attitude and his, um, red mist around.

Plus, he knows what I know:  football is suffering.

TANGENT:  Guess who didn't start in the midfield?  Or come on as a sub either, for that matter?  Pepe.  He's a bit sore about not starting every match.  “I don’t know why I’m not first choice any more,” he whined.  "I can't explain it."   However, he also said, “I know that I haven’t played well so far.”

I know I've been hard on Pepe.  I think I even called him simple-minded last week.  *goes back to check*  Back then I wondered if I was being unfair.  I don't know him and it's possible that he's not a dimwit, I thought.  Now my conscience is clear.

How can a sentient person come up with this:  [I know I haven't played well] + [dropped from starting lineup] because ???????

No. No.  It's like this, nimrod.  You suck means you don't play.  That's simple, basic cause and effect right there.  Not some unprovable correlation.  You suck causes you don't play.  Birdbrain.  Sheesh.

Amauri started up top.

The Hairz Were There.

He sustained an ankle injury and will be out for two weeks.  He went off in the 22d and Vincenzo came on.

Ugh.  Let's get it over with.

So.  At about minute 34 or so, Vince got a long ball.  He fiddled around with it for a while, then passed it to Milos on the right.  Milos brought it forward but he had nowhere to go and he was getting herded towards the goal line so he fell down and Captain Hairdo  Kaka Guy  Mr. DeMarco called a penalty.  In real time, it looked like it might have been legit, but on the replay, there was no doubt.  Milos took a dive.  And then, to make matters worse, Vincenzo kicked a shitty PK which Viviano saved easily.  It looked a little like Melo's audacious soft ball from a few matches ago, but it wasn't.  It was, plain and simple, a sorry sorry kick.  Weak sauce is what it was. Weak sauce from the Calabrian Cannon Pop Gun.

There it is again.

It was justice.  I know.  Doesn't mean it didn't suck.  Football is suffering.

But wait.  There's more.  After the match, he got a two-match ban.  Juventus Offside is positively outraged about tis and claims that this is the first time that the league has ever handed down a ban after the match for diving.

If you ask me, diving should be punished much more than it is, but it hardly seems fair that Milos got banned for two matches when most dives aren't called at all and the ones that are only get a yellow card for simulation.  But after all, he's only a Serb.

People really suck, ya know?

OK, I need to be cheered up.

WARNING:  GRATUITOUS DOGFISH INVASION!

That's better.

TANGENT:  Midfielders who are unavailable for various reasons:  Salihamidzic (maybe broken, maybe being punished for staying), Pepe (brain dead), Krasic (suspended), and Lanzafame (disappeared).

Moving right along, Vincenzo had the sort of match he usually has.

He was either offside or went down easily in the box pretty much for the rest of the day.  By minute 42, they were letting Leo take free kicks.  Who is in charge?  Why isn't Aquilani taking the free kicks?

Quags also started up front.

He worked....

...but it wasn't happening for him.  It wasn't really his fault.

To their great credit, Bologna stopped bothering with the attack and concentrated their full force on defending in the second half.  The Amauri Iaquinta-Quags attack was not working, so LDN actually tried something different.  That's a couple of times now he's changed things up when the game plan wasn't working.

Krasic pretty much fell apart after the whole, you know, the thing, so LDN brought on ADP in the 63d.  The Quags-Iaquinta-ADP trident wasn't working too well either, so LDN brought in Martinez for Quags in the 72d.

Martinez isn't quite there yet, but I make him as a valuable contributor pretty soon, assuming LDN stays broken up with Pepe.  Coaches love Pepe, Lord knows why, so we may not be able to count on that.

Bring it!

Is it just me, or is Mutarelli a whiny bitch?

Alessa did not manage to save the day.    :(

Also,Goal.com threatened us this week with their usual terrifying rumors about Ale leaving.

I've decided that any transfer rumor on Goal.com is guaranteed bullshit.  It helps me sleep at night to believe that.

&hearts

Where is Alessa's jersey, you might ask?  Interestingly, Malesani asked for it.  I wonder what that's about?

If you love Juventus and don't know this already, you probably have a life:  Next match is Saturday at the San Siro against AC Milan.
